WELD & JOINING INSPECTION

Weld & Joining Inspection AI for Every Joint Inspected

KOMPASS AI inspects every weld and joint as it is made, bead, seam, spot, rivet and solder, through the cameras you already have — no sampled joints, no teardown to find out, no bad weld discovered at final test, just joints checked and recorded as the line runs.

Trusted by industry-leaders for weld quality you can prove

THE PROBLEM

A Sampled Weld is a Teardown Waiting to Happen.

Weld quality gets checked on a fraction of joints, and confirmed by destroying parts. Everything in between is inference. When a joint fails in the field, the batch it came from was signed off on somebody else's weld.

Most Joints Are Never Checked

A body or a frame carries thousands of welds and a shift checks a handful. The rest are assumed good because the ones that were looked at were good.

Finding Out Costs You the Part

Destructive teardown and peel tests answer the question by scrapping the evidence, hours after the weld was made and long after the line moved on.

No Record of the Joint That Failed

A warranty claim names one joint on one part. What you can produce is a shift log and a sampling plan, not an image of that weld.
The Solution

Weld and joint inspection, built into the cameras you already have

Our Cognitive Product Inspection system, KOMPASS™, paired with modular vision hardware, inspects each weld and joint as it is made, flags the defects that show on the surface, and keeps an image of every joint it passed.

Inspect Every Joint, Not a Sample

  • Checks weld beads and seams for porosity, spatter, undercut and burn-through
  • Detects missing, off-position and misaligned welds
  • Covers spot welds, rivets and solder joints on the same line
  • Inspects the joint as it is made, not after a teardown

Catch the Joint Before the Assembly Closes

  • Flags a bad joint at the station, while the part is still accessible
  • Triggers reject gates and Andon alerts inside the dwell time
  • Shows which robot, gun or station the defects cluster on
  • Reduces reliance on destructive sampling for surface-visible defects

Keep the Evidence for Every Weld

  • Records an image of every joint, tied to the part it belongs to
  • Answers a field failure with that joint's own record
  • Builds defect trends by station, shift and joint type
  • Runs on the cameras and lighting already in the cell

USE CASES

Welds and Joints We Inspect

Welding is the most sampled check in the plant, because the honest test destroys the part. KOMPASS inspects what the surface shows on every joint as it is made, on the cameras already in the cell, so sampling covers what only sampling can.

Deployment

Live On Your Line, Not In A Six-Month Pilot

Joint inspection runs on the cameras you already have in your welding cells. No pilot line, no new hardware to install. We have mapped this deployment before, which is what makes it fast now.

STEP 01
Line audit and camera mapping

We walk your cells, confirm camera and lighting coverage around the torch, gun or head, and scope the joints and defects to inspect.

STEP 02
Model training on your joints

The model trains on your own joints and your own defect set, with 20 samples per defect, not a generic weld library.

STEP 03
Go live, verified

Inspection runs in shadow mode beside your current sampling and teardown results, then goes live on your reject gate once it agrees with them. Deployment takes 6–8 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything the surface shows: bead width and continuity, porosity breaking the surface, spatter, undercut, burn-through, and welds that are missing, offset or misaligned. It inspects every joint as it is made, which is the difference from a sampling plan that checks a handful of welds a shift.

No. Ultrasonic, radiographic and destructive tests answer questions about the inside of a joint, and they stay. KOMPASS covers what those cannot: every joint, inline, on surface-visible attributes. Used together, sampling can go back to doing what only sampling does rather than standing in for full coverage.

It checks spot welds for presence, position and surface condition: missed welds, off-position welds, and surface indications on the visible side. It does not measure nugget diameter, which sits below the surface and needs ultrasonic or destructive testing. Between them you get full coverage plus a sampled subsurface check.

Yes, and that is where the coverage gap is widest, because a robot cell produces joints faster than anyone can check them. Cameras mounted in the cell inspect each joint as it is completed, and defect trends are grouped by robot, gun and station so a drifting torch shows up as a pattern.

It inspects solder joints optically, on every board rather than a sample. X-ray remains the answer for hidden joints such as BGAs, where the connection sits under the package. Optical inspection covers the visible joints continuously; X-ray covers what optics physically cannot see.

KOMPASS runs on the cameras already in your welding cells. It connects to PLCs, robots and conveyors, actuates reject gates and Andon alerts within the dwell time, feeds MES and ERP for traceability, and runs at the edge with your data staying on-site.
